How to choose your baby gender?
A recent survey shows that nearly 80% of expected parents have a gender preference. Although having a health baby is the most important, It has nothing wrong to prefer a baby boy or a baby girl, especially for those couple who have one child already. But how to conceive a boy or a girl as you wish?
The natural rate to conceive a boy or a girl is about 50%. Aside from artificial insemination, which can cost up to $20,000, there is no way to guarantee that you can give birth to a preferred gender. But you can definitely increase the odd to conceive a boy or a girl.
Pregnancy is the result of a complex chain of events. In order to get pregnant, a woman must release an egg from one of her ovaries (ovulation). The egg must go through a fallopian tube toward the uterus (womb). A man’s sperm must join with (fertilize) the egg along the way. The fertilized egg must attach to the inside of the uterus (implantation). During this event, the sperm that fertilize the egg decides the gender of the baby.
A woman’s egg contains 23 chromosomes, while the 23rd chromosome is always an X. A sperm contains 23 chromosomes too, while the 23rd chromosome can be either an X or a Y. Only one sperm can join the egg and the 23 single chromosomes from the egg and the 23 from the sperm form a complete set of 23 pairs, 46 in total. If a sperm with the 23rd chromosome being X (girl sperm, X-sperm) fertilized the egg, a baby girl is conceived. If a sperm with the 23rd chromosome being Y (boy sperm, Y-sperm) fertilized the egg, a baby boy is conceived.
Since a man make nearly equal number of X-sperms and Y-sperms, the natural rate to conceive a girl or boy is about 50%. However, X-sperm and Y-sperm are different physically. X-sperms are bigger, move slower, having a longer lifetime, and are generally stronger than Y-sperms. X-sperms also favor acid environment. Because of these differences, you can increase the rate to conceive a boy or girl by timing the intercourse, choosing the right intercourse position, watching your diet or other method to change your vaginal PH.
