Small Business Grants for Tax Counseling for Seniors

The U.S. government features a number of small business grants via nearly all its offices. One such grant offers money for nonprofit organizations to make available counseling to seniors to help with completion of their own yearly tax returns.

The Internal Revenue Service has allocated $5.1 Million in the 2011 Fiscal Year to aid the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (T.C.E.) Program

The Internal Revenue Service, which operates inside the Treasury Department is approved to initiate contracts with private or non-governmental nonprofit 501c(3)’s that offer instruction and technical guidance to volunteers who provide cost-free tax guidance and assistance to seniors who are age 60 or older for the submission of their U.S. tax returns.

Grants may be applied to compensate volunteers for incidental expenditures such as travel, meals and other expenditures borne by them in providing tax counseling help at spots convenient for the older persons.

Through a competitive approach, appropriate candidate groups and agencies vie for acceptance to become a T.C.E. sponsor. These groups must be a nonprofit organization expert in managing volunteer services, along with familiarity with the tax completion process.

Qualified businesses may receive funds to offer regional Counseling Programs. Tax return completion assistance is provided to seniors through the entire traditional Federal Income tax submitting period, which is from the 1st of January through the 15th of April each year. On top of that the guidance activities needed to make certain senior-citizen taxpayers receive useful tax help of the highest quality may be carried out throughout the year.

The Cooperative Agreement between the Internal Revenue Service and the not for profit organization specifies the tasks that the program sponsor and IRS will perform, the geographical region involved, the maximum amount of financing provided for reimbursement and administrative functions as well as other data.

Beginning with the 2011 Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program, multi-year funding opportunities are available for not for profit groups that are qualified and meet the needed requirements.

Organizations submitting an application may choose, should they be focused on being considered for a multi-year T.C.E. grant. Consideration is limited to those applicants that meet all eligibility requirements.

Acceptance from the IRS of an organization for the T.C.E. program for one year will not necessarily imply that the group is going to be okayed into the T.C.E. system in following years.

A nonprofit organization which is approved to offer T.C.E. services is responsible for every aspect of managing a T.C.E. System which includes, but not limited to marketing the program, volunteer recruitment and instruction, Web page design and construction and outreach to seniors in their region.
