Best way to sell?

caterpillar_girl asked:

Hi. I bake cookies and prepare sweets at home. I never sold them before but I want to. What is the best way of selling them from home? Thanks

If you want to sell them straight out of your house, then you have to come up with a marketing strategy to attract people to go there and buy it. Of course, that will be a huge operation and logistical nightmare, so I’m assuming that you want to package them and have them delivered. You have to determine if you even have a market for them. Start small by starting a word of mouth campaign. If you get enough attraction then you can worry about something larger in scale.

You’ll have to have to be inspected first to ensure your kitchen meets health code guidelines. Contact your local health department and find out who the inspector is and set up an inspection date. Your home kitchen may have to have some modifications made before you can legally sell your foodstuffs.

You’ll also need to get a resale license so you can collect sales tax on your sales. The end user is the one who has to pay the sales tax, so if you wholesale, then you don’t collect tax, but you will need to have your wholesale customer’s resale number on file.

To market your goods, try going to various restaurants and stores and bring samples. Be prepared to discuss your wholesale pricing, minimum order, and the expected retail price. If you find you can’t charge enough wholesale to cover your costs and labor, then consider making something else.
