Home security systems issue?

Kumosaki asked:

I started working with a home security system dealer as a sales rep. I also have their equipment installed in house. But yesterday Our alarm went off and we didnt receive a phone call nor did the police arrive at my house. Nothing was stolen but now I don’t feel like working for them since their system to me is unreliable and I don’t want to lie to people saying that it is. What should I do?

Oftentimes law enforcement will not arrive at an alarm given the high probability of it being a mistake and due to resource restrictions so do not read into this as being a sign of a faulty alarm or company, unless ofcourse they provide private security response. Also, as you should know, house alarms are wired through the phonelines; when the alarm is triggered it hijacks the phoneline to alert your alarm company. There is a slight possibility that the phoneline was still in use when they attempted to call you, unless again, you have your emergency number listed to a cell phone or different address. My suggestion would be to simply call and inquire as to a) their policies on alarm response and b) why it was these policies were not initiated in your circumstance.

check your phone connection. pick up your phone to get a dial tone, then hit the police button to set off your alarm system. if the dial tone cuts off after you hit the panic button, it’s wired right. if the dial tone stays on and you hear the alarm system dialing over the phone, its connected to the phone but not connected professionally and is unacceptable. if nothing happens, its not connected to your phone line. this way you can check out the dial tone part. then, call your company and tell them you want to put the account on test. after they put it on test, set off the alarm, wait 2 minutes, then call them back to see if they got any alarm signals. if they didn’t get it, there’s 3 possibilities. 1, you had a new phone service installed that could have messed up the phone connection. 2, the installer screwed up (which shouldn’t happen because he should have checked to make sure it was communicating properly before he left). or 3, the alarm company screwed up (which is unacceptable and is risking being sewed by a customer). there’s a lot of start-up companies out there with owners who don’t know what they’re doing and technicians who need some extra years of experience. every company needs that 1 technician who has 20+ years under his belt to help the sometimes frequent questions asked by the less experienced installer. this could cause a half-ass install.

Check out if you have any interest in a home security system. It is the ultimate do-it-yourself security website. You can buy Honeywell products, find specs, manuals, installation videos, device sounds, and they are one of the few websites that give full warranties with the products. They also offer the best alarm system monitoring for only $15 per month and if you’re stuck in a contract with a company paying the usual $30 to $40 per month, they will help you get out of the contract early so you can start saving hundreds per year.
